Sometimes, an old-fashioned love story and a finely crafted film come
together with breathtaking photography to render a movie that leaves you breathless,
with a renewed belief in life and love bursting with possibilities. Such is the
simplicity and brilliance of Brooklyn, the Irish tale of young
Ellis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) who departs the village of her childhood to pursue a
better life across the ocean in America.
See the trailer: Brooklyn
Sponsored by a priest in Brooklyn, she
lands in a rooming house for young single women supervised by a busybody
landlady. Distraught in the unfamiliar world of New York City's Brooklyn
neighborhood, Ellis longs for what she left behind, and becomes an object of
scrutiny by roomies down the hall. Nevertheless, her spunk shines in a
department store job and at the local dance hall where an Italian boy, Tony, shyly
confesses his love for Irish girls.
Called back home for a family death, Ellis quickly
attracts a local suitor and the town gossip before she's faced with the biggest
decision of her life -- a choice between her two worlds. To call the nuanced
performances by Ronan and Emory Cohen (Tony) charming is an understatement. The
honesty and optimism of the sweethearts fuel the film with passion and promise.
Nominations for sure, for an old-fashioned love story that leaves you warm and
glowing.
